As part of our campaign ”My Community, My Vote”, Time for Equality has the pleasure to host a special poetry workshop with London-born Maltese poet, translator, and creative activist Antoine Cassar.

About the workshop – The Shapes of Europe:
The Iberian bull, the Scandinavian moose, the Slovenian hen. The Italian high heel boot, the French toga or safety jacket. The Greek fingers playing ducks and drakes in the Aegean, skimming stones towards the Anatolian mare. The British witch on a broomstick, her back to the continent, attempting to fly west yet bumping into the Irish bear. And the Luxembourgish snowshoe, or crescent moon resting on a cloud. What is it that keeps the European jigsaw together?
In the first part of this workshop, we will look at a number of satirical maps of Europe, in conjunction with ‘cartographic’ poems by Aleph and Pessoa. In the second part, we will do a close collective reading of contemporary poems on the European condition, discuss possible angles, forms and images for poems of our own, and begin writing.
The workshop will be given in English, but you can write in whichever language(s) you wish. Feedback will then be given by e-mail or in a possible follow-up session. Poems can be published on the Time For Equality blog, in time for the European elections.

About Antoine Cassar:
Antoine Cassar (London, 1978) is a London-born Maltese poet, translator, and creative activist, currently based in Luxembourg.

Erbgħin Jum (Forty Days, EDE Books, 2017), a book-length poem on childhood trauma, depression, and walking as self-therapy, was awarded the Malta National Book Prize in 2018, and has been shortlisted for the 2020 Gdánsk European Poet of Freedom award. Passaport (2009), printed in the form of an anti-passport for all peoples and all landscapes, has been published in eleven languages, and adapted for the stage in France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Australia. Proceeds from the sale of the booklet are donated to grassroots associations supporting refugees in the community.
Antoine is the founder of the social media project Spread poetry, not fear, launched in reaction to the 2015 Paris attacks and the subsequent media scaremongering and manipulation. In 2013 he edited the multilingual artistic newspaper on migration and borders Le monde n’est pas rond, on behalf of No one is illegal – Luxembourg. He completed a PhD in Medieval Literature in 2017 (Univ. de Alcalá), with a thesis on the origins of the Spanish sonnet.

Time for Equality is pleased to take part in the Luxembourg-based grassroots campaign to promote greater engagement among citizens of the European Union and to encourage a higher voter turnout in the next European Elections in May.

Who can register to vote:
In order to be allowed to vote in the European elections in Luxembourg, one must be an EU or a Luxembourg national, be at least 18 years old on election day (26 May) and be a resident of the Grand Duchy. Learn more on icanvote.lu.
