To raise awareness of human trafficking and modern slavery the United Nations and Time For Equality presented “Sold“, a film by Jeffrey D. Brown, at Cine Utopia, Luxembourg, 19 June last.
The event was under the aegis of Cine-Onu, with the support of ILO Benelux Office and the contribution of the Red Sand Project. It was introduced by film director Jeffrey D. Brown, live from London, and followed by an interactive panel discussion with Irene Wintermayr (policy officer, ILO Office for Benelux and the EU), Fabienne Rossler (secretary-general, Commission consultative des Droits de l’Homme, Luxembourg) Thomas Kauffmann (Ecpat Luxembourg), and moderated by Rosa Brignone and Karen Wauters, Time For Equality (see the full programme).

Slavery and exploitation of human beings have no place in 21st century. Yet 21 million women, men and children are trapped in slavery, three out of every 1,000 people worldwide. 4.5 million are victims of sexual exploitation. Slavery is closer than you think; although illegal in every country, it persists in every corner of the world, including the most advanced democracies. Modern slavery generates annual illegal profits of over US$ 150 billion – the most lucrative and fastest growing criminal activity after weapons and drugs.
What can you do?
Support a global alliance against modern slavery
- The campaign aims to persuade at least 50 countries to ratify the ILO’s Forced Labour Protocol by 2018. The Protocol is a legally binding treaty that will require governments to take new measures tackling modern slavery in all its forms. It works on three main levels: protection, prevention and access to justice. So far 17 countries have ratified the Protocol.

- Alliance 8.7
- The UN Sustainable Development Goal Target 8.7 includes “…by 2025 end child labour in all its forms”. No government, country or organization can solve this challenge alone.
- “Alliance 8.7” is a multi-stakeholder platform which has four goals: accelerating timelines; conducting research and sharing knowledge; driving innovation; increasing and leveraging resources.

- Luxembourg for Freedom
- #LuxembourgforFreedom is a community-based campaign initiated by Time for Equality to support ILO’s 50ForFreedom movement.
- It was launched on Diversity Day Letzebuerg 2017. The benefits of diversity will come from all sectors of society working together to build a sustainable inclusive society, through respect of human rights, dignity and freedom.
- Sign up and ask the Luxembourg government to ratify ILO’s Protocol on Forced Labour.

The protocol complements the Forced Labour Convention of 1930 and requires member states to take effective measures to prevent and eradicate forced labour. So far, 47 countries have ratified it.
