Gender Matters : the transnational GendeRIS project (Romania, Italy, Spain) has just published a Gender-Sensitive Anti-Trafficking Methodology Handbook, addressed to professionals dealing with human trafficking issues.
Trafficking in human beings (THB) is a gross violation of human rights. It occurs all over the world and affects almost every country as an origin, transit or destination country, and sometimes a combination of all three. Human trafficking is a criminal activity: human beings, mostly women and children, are traded as if they were commodities, and illicit profits are made by violating their fundamental rights to dignity, integrity and freedom. The estimated number of people trafficked to or within the EU amounts to several hundred thousands a year.
On 19 June 2012, the European Commission adopted the EU Strategy towards the Eradication of Trafficking in Human Beings (2012-2016) in order to support and complement the implementation of EU legislation on this issue (Directive 2011/36/EU).
The GendeRIS project was designed with the key objective of stepping up the prevention of trafficking in human beings. In particular GendeRIS, which involves Romania, Italy and Spain, aims to support and strengthen the fight against human trafficking by taking the gender dimension into account.
GendeRIS’ team of experts has just published a Gender Sensitive Anti-Trafficking Methodology Handbook. The handbook targets professionals dealing with trafficking in human beings in public institutions or CSOs (Civil Society Organizations), and has the following main objectives :
• To introduce the conceptual framework for a gender-sensitive methodology to combat THB.
• To present and discuss the gender perspective within information and awareness-raising campaigns.
• To focus on the gender approach in training on the prevention of THB.
Taking into account the complexity of the topic, the handbook suggests a few key elements in order to introduce a gender-sensitive approach to facing and combating THB.
