Across the world, women are underrepresented in leadership positions in the media. Gender stereotyping – either subtle or blatant – sadly remains a reality. A Council of Europe Conference “Media and the Image of Women” (Amsterdam, 4-5 July 2013) addressed concerns and challenges related to stereotyping and sexism in the media, freedom of expression and gender equality. The conference also assessed challenges posed by and the potential of new media technologies to advance gender equality.
